The sun shone and it was a fabulous wee break. The hotel itself could do with a bit of investment but it was very dog friendly and even served breakfast in the bar so that dogs and owners could sit together as the only place dogs weren't allowed was the restaurant. There were lots of walks on hand including one up through the other cabins (it did say dogs on lead there) down the track from the hotel into the village and the dog friendly <a href="http://strathardleinn.co.uk/" target="_blank">Stathardle Inn</a> which was excellent for a meal and had a fabulous beer garden. Or down the track and through the field down to the river bank and the playing field.<br /><br />We also visited Fortingall where the oldest tree in Europe and possibly the world is stood - <a href="http://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/fortingall-yew-p249411" target="_blank">The Fortingall Yew</a>. (dogs are not allowed in the church yard where the tree is but it is still a fascinating piece of history) We took a trip to Aberfeldy and found a small ice cream shop (Coffee and Cones) where there was a fridge full of flavours to choose from Whilst trying to decide what flavour to have we were told Roscoe was very welcome to come inside and help us choose.<br />
<br />
We then headed to Pitlochry and sat in the sun at <a href="http://www.theoldmillpitlochry.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Old Mill Inn</a> where there were water bowls outside and umbrellas to provide shade, this was followed by a walk at <a href="http://www.pitlochry.org/things_to_do_pitlochry/queens-view.htm" target="_blank">Queens view</a> just outside Pitlochry which is another beautiful piece of history.<br />
<br />
It was a weekend filled with good food (especially at the Strathardle Inn) swims in rivers, long walks, sunshine and comfy beds. Whats not to like for a lowly Rescue Staffie!!!<br />

<br />
This 2nd chance was all to evident in the faces and eyes of some of the lucky ones who have made it to a home here in the uk who attended the show. The best in show was a beautiful Rommie dog called Donna, her tail never stopped and she was a character. So pleased for her<br />
<br />
Roscoe got 6th place in Best Veteran Class and 4th place in Best Rescue :-)<br />
<br />
The sun shone and we raised £712 for the shelter a fabulous day out rounded off by a cold beer in a dog friendly local :-)<br />

This was our little adventure to <a href="http://www.invercoe.co.uk/index.php?id=20" target="_blank">Invercoe Hobbit house</a> which we enjoyed in May we were very lucky with the weather and enjoyed walks around Loch Leven and in Glen Nevis (at the foot of Ben Nevis) and we found a fabulous dog friendly pub - <a href="http://www.crerarhotels.com/ourhotels/glencoe_hotel/" target="_blank">The Gathering</a> which provided great meals for us and a bowl of water and pigs ear for Roscoe.<br />
<br />
The next photo shows Roscoe enjoying his trip in a mountain gondola at <a href="http://www.nevisrange.co.uk/gondola-info.asp" target="_blank">Aonach Mor</a> Gondolas a very dog friendly attraction and if you have a fit dog (and owner!) there are many good walks at the top with spectacular viewpoints. We opted for a leisurely half hour stroll and a panini and beer at the Snowgoose cafe (dogs are not allowed inside but on a good day there are plenty outdoor seats)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi45pebNR1G0Z1Zd5z8UVDD0YxB8cuZ-X6dQzH0QzVWqfIxVtWzqVpJF195-dAH0C9Pm8DxfpHQc2BEF4nqZP5ns8TQUEYxlh8Vi0yG-aN0vDX5qlq5-4fx7c5r1A9IFUloEHO9BDhbkIdS/s1600/SAM_0196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi45pebNR1G0Z1Zd5z8UVDD0YxB8cuZ-X6dQzH0QzVWqfIxVtWzqVpJF195-dAH0C9Pm8DxfpHQc2BEF4nqZP5ns8TQUEYxlh8Vi0yG-aN0vDX5qlq5-4fx7c5r1A9IFUloEHO9BDhbkIdS/s1600/SAM_0196.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then it was back to the hobbit house to dream about the days adventures</div>

After check in to a lovely room with a huge bed we set off to drive across the Moulin Moor to Pitlochry so we could have a look round and a walk.<br /><br />The sky was blue and the sun was breaking through as we took a walk through Pitlochry, over the swing bridge and up to the Fish ladder at the Dam<br />

Back to the hotel where we had a lovely steak dinner and wine and Roscoe was allowed to sit in the bar area with us as we ate, he behaved beautifully and was happy to make friends with anyone who would speak to him!! Including several people walking the <a href="http://www.caterantrail.org/" target="_blank">Cateran Trail</a> - a lovely trail that takes 3 - 5 days to complete and takes in some lovely scenery</div>
<br />
The Cateran Trail is far too long for Roscoe (and me LOL) but our morning walk we walked along part of it so we can say we have been on the trail<br />

Our break was over too quickly but before heading home we turned North and took a drive up Glenshee past the ski slopes and down the other side into Braemar where we had another wander and headed out to the forest beside the Linn of Dee. Sadly my phone died at this point so the only photo I got was the river in Braemar!</div>

<br />
Following our lovely day out at St Andrews we headed North and West the last weekend in July to Kenmore. We left an overcast and cloudy home and drove off to wards the sun and blue skies<br />
<br />
We had a wander round the village and along by the river then we had lunch at the Kenmore hotel. Dogs are allowed in one of the bars where food is served but it was such a lovely day we opted to sit at the tables out the back over looking the river and the ducks. Roscoe as usual was oblivious to the ducks and other dogs and lay quietly in the sun.<br />
<br />
After lunch we headed back to the small beach area and had great fun paddling, Roscoe seems to really like the water.<br />
<br />
Here is the view from where we ate lunch<br />

The sun shone the sky was blue as we headed off to St Andrews (Where Prince William and Kate Middleton went to university and met). It is a beautiful little town with amazing beaches, there are 3 to choose from. We headed to the largest of the 3, and the pictures show just how quiet the beach was considering it was the 2nd hottest day this year. It was lovely, some dog walkers, some swimmers and some families enjoying a day out but still plenty beach to enjoy<br /><br />Here are some photos of Roscoe enjoying the sea, i had gone in for a paddle and he came too!!<br />

The 1st of him with his Best in Rescue win at Camperdown fun show, and the 2nd of him running through the wild flowers on Orkney<br />

Such a shame work gets in the way of beach walks. We may head to the beach tody though.<br />
<br />
Last weekend we visited a local horse sanctuary which had an open day to raise funds and Roscoe had great fun trying out the agility. He enjoyed it much better than the last time we tried, but I guess he is probably a little more comfortable with us now as he has been with us longer.<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of photos of him at the agility<br />
<br />

Love this photo</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He spent a fair bit of time at the<a href="http://www.staffordshirerescuescotland.co.uk/" target="_blank"> Staffy Rescue Scotland</a> stand and he was a fabulous ambassador lying down for tummy tickles and making friends with everyone including one lady who had always been too scared to even walk near a staffy before and she walked away from the stand saying she would look differently at Staffies in the future. A job well done.<br /><br />There were carriage driving displays and sheep and goats in a small petting zoo area and Roscoe was completely unphased by all the noise sights and smells. Because he was such a good boy we had to stop for ice cream on the way home :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope the summer weather continues and remember never leave your dog in a car in this heat not even for a short while with the windows open as your car quickly becomes an oven</div>

Roscoe had a fabulous time. Wide open beaches, with white sand and turquoise waters, blue skies (some days) Lots of new smells, and places to go. He was far more settled on this holiday than when we went to Loch Lomond. I am hoping that means he feels more secure and like he is part of our family for keeps.<br />
<br />
We stayed in a little self catering apartment with sea views called <a href="http://thenoust.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Noust</a> This was also a Bed and Breakfast and was the local post office and the local pub which did excellent food. Sadly the pub was not dog friendly but the bed and breakfast and the apartment were.<br />
<br />
Here is Roscoe settling in to his holiday home<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP_Do9-UnGTKV4XknB5ZiFtY87_wpxBAfVePmUvsnT3t4cBMlcdvYt-iW2bwnWcmf2MuwF-pzZrPMENbvT_FYZQOau1jJUNRMFssToBQeV59sJyuXyi-p_qYDJXDqMtYwqJyENFTifHFxV/s480/DSCF7103+(480+x+270).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP_Do9-UnGTKV4XknB5ZiFtY87_wpxBAfVePmUvsnT3t4cBMlcdvYt-iW2bwnWcmf2MuwF-pzZrPMENbvT_FYZQOau1jJUNRMFssToBQeV59sJyuXyi-p_qYDJXDqMtYwqJyENFTifHFxV/s320/DSCF7103+(480+x+270).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Orkney truly is a magical place and the next couple of photos have no Roscoe in them, but they are typical of the amazing history of these magnificent Islands which are rich in culture. We had many walks around the standing stones and other neolithic sites of interest and we spent Midsummer's night at the Ring of Brodgar celebrating the setting sun as our ancestors may well have done 5000 years ago</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Orkney itself proved to be very dog friendly and although many places to eat did allow dogs in the places which didn't had seating outside, thankfully we were blessed with good weather most of the time and there was a distinct lack of midges (The Scottish Mosquito!) Here is Roscoe enjoying his lunch at <a href="http://wrigleyandthereel.com/" target="_blank">The Reel</a> in Kirkwall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went to see lots of the sites and had many walks along the beautiful beaches Here is Roscoe leaving <a href="http://www.tomboftheeagles.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Tomb of The Eagles</a> I think he may have been chased out by some of the old souls inside!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And finally here are a selection of Roscoe having fabulous fun on various walks and at the beaches. Orkney is a fabulous place for a holiday and I think Roscoe will agree. I hope those of you following the blog can see the change in Roscoe, His coat is glossy, he has put on weight and he has a definite Staffy smile </div>

<br />
He travelled very well considering he is not a huge fan of the car and settled down after about an hour and decided he wanted to lie in the back passenger footwells and there he stayed for the rest of the journey, and today went back there when we were driving about!<br />
<br />
There will be an overload of photos when we get home but for now here he is enjoying his 1st morning walk on Orkney Mainland<br />

We have visited an ancient stone-age burial site today at <a href="http://www.tomboftheeagles.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Tomb Of The Eagles</a> which was very interesting and Roscoe got to actually go inside the tomb, he found it far easier to get in and out than I did (and yes there are photos!!)<br /><br />So a very quick update but wanted to keep you up to date on Roving Roscoe!!!</div>

It was, if anything too warm so we took shelter from the sun's heat inside a covered tent area.<br />
<br />
First up was Scrufts (which is the equivalent of Crufts for crossbreeds) and we entered best rescue and most handsome dog aged 3 - 7) Sadly we weren't even selected for the shortlist although the dog that won most handsome was a lovely collie cross who was really handsome. However as this was only Roscoe's 2nd show he was wonderful and seemed happier than last week with his tail wagging and an almost staffy smile.<br />
<br />
We met up with Roscoe's new best friend Caesar another rescue dog, they are both male and both rescues and only met for the 1st time 7 days ago and here thy are doing their very best best friend seal impersonations<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Later in the afternoon and we had a picnic lunch (when we did sit out in the sun) we headed to the companion show we entered Most Handsome Dog, Best Rescue, Most adorable eyes and Judge the dog would like to take home. Neither Caesar nor Roscoe were picked for short list in Most Handsome Dog....they were robbed LOL<br /><br />Both were in best rescue and to our amazement Roscoe was picked to be 1st place, the judge spent bit of time asking the story of each dog and how long the owners had owned them for etc, it was nice to see a judge who seemed genuinely interested in the dogs. Here he is with his 1st prize rosette he also got a frisbee with a ball in the middle (photos to follow in next update!)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hopefully this week we will start classes with Roscoe although he is very very obedient there are some things he is very unsure of like the commands wait and stay he looks genuinely worried that he will be left when we try these commands so hoping to build a strong bond so he knows he is here with us for keeps. Also think he will enjoy the social aspect as he is fabulous with dogs and people so hoping he will enjoy the classes. The 1st one will be on Tuesday night if I can get in touch with the lady who runs it as quite rightly she wants to see vaccination cards but Roscoe's is in his old name of Harry! He suits Roscoe much better :-)</div>

Scrufts is a dog show for non pedigree dogs and is basically the cross breed Crufts. There are a few classes and we will be entering The Best Rescue category and also the Best Veteran. It's all a bit of a fun and to be honest we are entering more to show the soft side of Staffies and how soft and dopey they can be. We have been practicing sit and stand as last week all Roscoe wanted to do was to lie down. If the weather holds we may well try to bath Roscoe - that will definitely necessitate a post!! As he is not very good with rain and his foster carers tried to bath him with very little success. Pictures will follow this weekend!<br />
<br />
We have a "new family member" or more of a lovely reminder of an old family member. An online friend Pamela Duthie who makes Feltie models of dogs sent us a lovely model of Ben our late dog and the dog who 1st introduced us to Staffies<br />

Now it is time to go and enjoy some of that rare Scottish sunshine and take Roscoe for his morning wander to the park.</div>
<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17834268920380707534noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869961747403006267.post-50430719814613979962013-06-04T01:19:00.002-07:002013-06-04T01:19:35.951-07:00A lovely weekend and 1st shot at agilityWell finally summer has arrived along with some glorious sunshine on what was arguably the best weekend of the year so far. Saturday however found me working all day whilst Roscoe and his dad "enjoyed" a day of watching Sky Sports interrupted only for walk in the park.<br /><br />The preceding week had seen Roscoe's touch of conjunctivitis clear up with the help of the antibiotic treatment from the vets so his eyes were looking good again (it will become apparent later why this is an important point!)<br />
<br />
So Sunday was off to Angus Dog Activity club's open day in conjunction with Angus college. This was a fun day with a try your hand at agility/terrier racing and a fun dog show. It was a beautiful day. We arrived and met up with Kirsty and Caesar from Any Staffie'll do rescue and also Rosie with Boo, Dylan and Whitney (4 weeks ago Whitney an elderly lady had been handed in to a vets down south to be put to sleep but ASDR rescued her)<br />
<br />
Stuart took Roscoe round the agility, he was fine with the jumps, hated the tunnels, was wary of the A-frame and leapt off the top of the high walk and could see no point in weave!! But his tail never stopped!!<br />
<br />
We entered the best veteran class and we were robbed LOL Didn't even get placed but lovely Whitney came 1st and very well deserved it was too. Next up was most handsome dog and again we was robbed!! no place but Caesar got a well deserved 2nd. Then we had most appealing eyes and thanks to the antibiotic drops Roscoe got his 1st rosette with us and he came 2nd in the most appealing eyes class. Then we had dog the judge would most like to take home, again no places but a gorgeous Rottie got 1st place.<br /><br />All in all it was fun and a great chance to socialise and mix with dogs people and children, some in face paints and carrying large objects like inflatable hammers and of course plenty of ice-cream and Roscoe behaved impeccably.<br />
<br />
After the classes I tried the agility and this ime was a bit better, again his tail wagged the whole time and he was much happier with the A frame, managed 1 tunnel(with the help of a tennis ball) and after a few attempts did the high walk<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF-4IqOY5wttdgD8ixpLRk4t7XanhaAlNictp2zRGMb43KxkFOzGkJPvV3QS5WcuNrK998Chq1QAOpwStnC4GpAT7HbDtcaYsLAoRxjm__tBG3K54IkT_3OWfxycmDPaqNb07Cv3C9t2D7/s1600/4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF-4IqOY5wttdgD8ixpLRk4t7XanhaAlNictp2zRGMb43KxkFOzGkJPvV3QS5WcuNrK998Chq1QAOpwStnC4GpAT7HbDtcaYsLAoRxjm__tBG3K54IkT_3OWfxycmDPaqNb07Cv3C9t2D7/s1600/4.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
If you look closely you can see Roscoe on the high walk!<br />
<br />
We then had a go at terrier racing and Roscoe saw as much point in that as he did the weave poles. He was more interested in running to anyone who would speak to him than chasing the lure!!<br />
<br />
But all in all it was as it said on the tin, a fun day out with a rosette to boot<br />

And the health of family members which was quite all consuming has now also improved :-) Though Roscoe was very good at licking away the many tears and giving cuddles!<br />
<br />
There is way too much to catch up on so I will try a sort of bullet point approach so that if you are interested you can see how far we have come in the 9 weeks we have had Roscoe. There is still a lot of adventures and fun ahead but it looks like Roscoe is happy to have us look after him<br /><br />Roscoe is now happy to be left alone (although he has discovered that no matter where we put the cats food he can find it and eat it - all well and good but its prescription food at £23 a small bag!!! On the plus side it must be tastier than the cats tray as he leaves that alone now!!)<br />
<br />
Toots and Roscoe continue to bond extremely well and enjoy sharing cuddles together<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had our 1st holiday away with Roscoe, although he was a bit unsure I think he liked it and we hope he now realises that home is here with us. He was very whiny in the car and wouldn't settle (This continues to be an ongoing problem and we are currently teaching him "Quiet" without too much success!) and when we got to the fabulous<a href="http://theshepherdshouse.co.uk/" target="_blank"> Shepherds Hut </a>at Loch Lomond he was quite confused, but he did like the long walks along parts of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Highland_Way" target="_blank">West Highland Way</a> and enjoying his 1st swim in a Scottish Loch (Loch Lomond)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He was also treated to an easier way to see Loch Lomond as we took a pleasure cruise on the Loch from Balmaha to Luss, it was a shame about the weather as it was drizzly and Grey but Roscoe found his sea or should I say Loch Legs</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf19jjziJSlsRFF7vOCDeIXmdQ6M_l1CosuvjjKIceJ8Wl9iBKqsd3bO0yiei1EzG6VjlCmqOcD_Js5OcK57hEhh8sNUHD9S02a79rUASIMnrxNjNet5vxlDJuoZ9CDpQTcusgn1urCO99/s1600/SDC10046+(360+x+480).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf19jjziJSlsRFF7vOCDeIXmdQ6M_l1CosuvjjKIceJ8Wl9iBKqsd3bO0yiei1EzG6VjlCmqOcD_Js5OcK57hEhh8sNUHD9S02a79rUASIMnrxNjNet5vxlDJuoZ9CDpQTcusgn1urCO99/s320/SDC10046+(360+x+480).jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all I think his 1st holiday with us was a success and once we work on and succeed at quiet the car journeys will be much more enjoyable for all! Another 1st was Roscoe's 1st time at a pub in his home town as we enjoyed the 1st and possibly only day of summer, it is a shame the photo is not the best but I somehow like this next pic</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have also been on a couple of walks with the couple who fostered Roscoe and their foster fail Astrid who is a young bitch and they get on very well and enjoy playing and running together and we hope to make this a regular thing.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And many other places including a walk in the busy town. Nothing seems to phase Roscoe he s fabulous with adults, kids and other dogs even small yappy dogs and growly unfriendly (off lead) dogs. The only time he has been even a little upset was when a big hairy Alsatian tried to mount him and even then he just warned him and then carried on playing with Kong!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all he is a fabulous lad and we have to wonder how, like so many others, he ended up in the pound. I have just interrupted the typing of this blog to put in some eye drops as Roscoe has a touch of conjunctivitis, yesterday was a battle of wills and Staffy heads v humans! but this morning was much calmer and went without event he seems to have accepted we are not going to hurt him :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that is the update till next time which should be sooner and until then we will continue to introduce Roscoe to new experiences and to work on his car travelling and excitability when we are going out for a walk (our theory for that at the minute is picking up the lead several times without actually going out and the front door does not get opened until we have a calm sit and when outside if he starts to pull or yip excitedly we calmly walk back toward the door until we have calmness...it seems to be sinking in, but there is a lot of Staffy head for it to penetrate!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

He is a smart dog and definitely knows his name now and is being walked off lead - we started by taking him to the tennis courts so it was a fully enclosed area and let him off but we did this for 3 days and each time his recall was 100% so he now gets off lead in the park, This is when he is happiest he runs with his ears forward and his tail wagging He truly looks happy, when o lead and even around the house he isn't a really waggy tail dog but he loves the park<br /><br />We are still having slight issues with him being left alone when we go to work Wednesday was the 1st day he had been left for any great length of time and as I parked the car after finishing work this is the scene I was met with!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ8gYueOQPmjv3P4QF3gA63b5XYFi9fivKCGraqsgPBfMXIscsJaGF7hZm4_ZaT1Zxifrp5hVOMqFYM35pSJnileDKi3h3UXj3EjfwH0_eohhZiY7uX57mdghRO158VYK31nGbrm4XTMk0/s1600/392708_10151426273638159_1474935798_n+(452+x+600).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ8gYueOQPmjv3P4QF3gA63b5XYFi9fivKCGraqsgPBfMXIscsJaGF7hZm4_ZaT1Zxifrp5hVOMqFYM35pSJnileDKi3h3UXj3EjfwH0_eohhZiY7uX57mdghRO158VYK31nGbrm4XTMk0/s1600/392708_10151426273638159_1474935798_n+(452+x+600).jpg" height="320" width="241" /></a></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I guess he wanted to see out, but on a serious note it did not even occur to us that vertical blinds could be dangerous! He could easily have got caught or injured. So we removed the bottom chain and cut the pull cords in 2 so he couldn't hang himself and the next day we left the blinds open so he could see out without having to launch himself at the blinds! And that seemed to work as since the Wednesday we have not come back to blinds and curtains everywhere.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We are leaving without any fuss and when we come back in we do not pay him any attention until he is settled and he seems to be getting the idea :-)</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Friday saw a trip to the vets to have his neutering scar checked out, the vet nurse was very happy with it and removed 1 of the 2 stitches, it appears Roscoe removed the other himself!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We mentioned that he had had an upset tummy as on Friday morning he had very bad diarrhoea and the foamy diarrhoea and then he vomited white foam as well, the vet said not to worry it was probably just all the stress and changes he had been through.</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I write this on Saturday he was a bit better this morning and we are feeding him chicken and rice for a few days in the hope it will settle but we will keep a close eye on him.</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As this is Easter weekend and Roscoe can't have chocolate we will take him to the beach at some point and see what he makes of the sea (though it is a bit chilly) <br /><br />We also treated him to a new collar and lead and his name tag arrived (we have put our name not his on the tag a good tip so if he is found or stolen then no one knows his name)</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here he is looking beautiful and you can just about see his new collar</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
But before we start on our exciting day I will tell you about our mistake on Sat night/Sun Morning. Entirely our fault but as this blog is the good and the bad and clearly here the stupid I will share with you all.<br />
<br />
After my Friday night not sleeping I was shattered and went through to bed Roscoe came too and jumped up, when told to get OFF he did no bother and trotted through to living room. So later when I was asleep he trotted back to see me (presumably to check I hadn't fled the house!) and decided it was fair game to get up on the bed, Stuart assumed he was fine and carried on watching TV. At just after midnight Stuart came to get him for last pee to find him on the bed, he told him off and straight away Roscoe jumped off the bed. He went out for a widdle came back in and jumped back up on the bed. Stuart did his teeth put lights out etc and came through (very different to the routine of the 1st 2 nights) as he came into the bedroom in the dark fumbling his way around in the dark In the dark Stuart must have touched Roscoe's back or shoulder whilst looking for his collar (he didn't want to say off for fear of waking me - again a break to routine) Poor Roscoe got a fright and barked at Stuart poor Stuart got a fright and poor me who was sound asleep got a huge fright!!<br />
<br />
I woke up shouting off which Roscoe did straight away no bother and came through to the living room Stuart followed him through and they were very quickly pals again, but a lesson we learned and and it was entirely our fault. So then Stuart sat through put the TV back on sat for another good while and repeated the going to bed routine we had practised the 1st 2 nights.<br />
<br />
So anyway back to Sunday up in the morning and a wander round the block and all was well after another quiet night.<br />
<br />
A day trying to set up a blog!! (this blog) and activate twitter, then Stuart headed to a family birthday, it would have been too much excitement for Roscoe and too long to leave him so I stayed with him. We went for a wander in the park, in the snow and hail<br />

When we got home we had a short wait and Kirsty arrived from the rescue, she had only brought the adoption papers as was pretty sure he wasn't going anywhere which was true!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had a chat and I told her I was a wee bit worried as roscoe hadn't eaten his breakfast but that when I had taken him to the park he had been right and active. She put my mind at rest and said it would be down to everything he had been through in the last few days and weeks and yet again another change in his food. She said if he didn't improve or if I was still worried in a day or 2 we could sort out a vets visit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She had a look at his neutering scar which I had also been a bit concerned about, but said it was looking fine, yes it was a bit red but there was no yellowing or signs of pus so she was not concerned. I was happy to report that Roscoe had learnt his name and that we had ordered a name tag which should be with us on Monday (we were using a key ring tag we could write on till it arrived) and that we were walking him on a long line but he was very responsive and eager to come back. So a continued chat where we ended up speaking about weddings and then some paperwork and Roscoe was adopted!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So as a special treat, later in the evening we worked on close encounters of the cat kind again with the trusty cooked chicken we fed both Roscoe and Toot bits of chicken edging them closer and closer together and always making sure Toots got the 1st and last bit, and the end result was</div>

So I was up t the back of 6am and I got up switched on the hall light and Roscoe was curled up on the sofa, he lifted his head and started to make little happy yippy noises I just ignored him (hard as it was!) I didn't make eye contact didn't talk I went straight to the bathroom and showered and dressed then came through opened the baby gate and walked in again trying very hard not to make any fuss at all!<br />
<br />
Once Roscoe was calm, after bringing me every toy he could find I calmly spoke to him by calling his name and gently stroking him when he was settled we headed out the back so he could "go widdle"<br />
<br />
Then we came back in and Roscoe decided to try with every toy once more! After my breakfast We had an exercise in sitting to get his lead on and then a longer exercise in learning the front door does not open until he stops Yipping excitedly!!! This did take several attempts as even when quiet every time I went to the handle the yipping would start so I just stopped and stood still till quiet and then tried again.<br />
<br />
Eventually we headed off round the block for a walk. Then it was time to go to work the only good thing was I would get a coffee break at home so would get to see him later so I calmly shut baby gate and went out without saying anything at all leaving Stuart sleeping and Roscoe pacing and whimpering. <br />
<br />
Soon it was time for my break and I headed home to find a locked door assuming Stuart must be out walking him I let myself in to find both baby gates open the house in darkness and Roscoe on the bed with Stuart!!! I was beginning to wonder if I could use cooked chicken to train Stuart as easily as Roscoe. When I woke Stuart and asked why the open baby gates and dog on bed the reply was straightforward - "He wanted to be with me"! The makings of a Daddy's boy then ...<br />
<br />
All to soon it was back to work but 5 O clock came round and I went home to see him with a new toy. Stuart had been practising going in and out of the house all day to try and get him used to the fact we would come back so about an hour after I came home he was rewarded with his new toy<br />

I have to say he loved it and had fabulous fun with it but it did only last about 10 minutes before it ended up in the bin as he had chewed through the links!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17834268920380707534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869961747403006267.post-22595703209529877282013-03-25T09:06:00.003-07:002013-03-25T09:06:48.661-07:00The 1st Night and DayBring a new dog into our home with an existing cat was always going to be a little unnerving and we had the added issue that Roscoe did not know his name so we had a hard time catching his attention but the introduction went as smoothly as could be expected. After we had installed some baby gates (DIY is not our strong point) we let Roscoe explore the living room whilst Toots (our cat sniffed and snorted from behind the safety of 2 baby gates!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
He charged about like a bull in a china shop ad immediately took up residence on our sofa and in particular in MY seat!! We decided this was the perfect opportunity to teach "off" as although we wanted to share our home and indeed our sofa and we are by no means into the whole dominance theory we do want to have a dog which will obey our desire to get them off the sofa when required!<br />
<br />
This involved chicken, and as we said Off we threw some cooked chicken on the floor Roscoe soon got the hang of it and was happy to leave the sofa when told "off"<br />
<br />
The chicken also brought Toots into the living room thus killing two birds with 1 stone and within an hour of being in the house we had harmony - all be it at a distance but Toot and Roscoe were in the same room. Far more than we could have hoped for, and all due to Toots having an escape route and Roscoe having the Baby gate as barrier and of course Cooked Chicken<br />

The 1st night Stuart stayed with Roscoe until well after 1am just playing with him and continuing with the "off" command and also teaching him his name by speaking it in a really happy happy voice and when he responded the trusty chicken was administered! At bed time no fuss was made Stuart just put the tv off shut the baby gate switched the lights off and came to bed, and not a peep came from Roscoe the whole night Fabulous...except for the fact that I lay awake worrying as there was not a sound!!</div>

What would we need for our new arrival.<br />
<br />
We were not new dog owners but still we made a list! Food, bed, treats, toys (he was coming with collar and lead and his favourite tennis ball) more tennis balls, of course I wanted to buy everything cuddly toys car seatbelt and jacket for the cold, Hubby however was slightly more reserved in spending a whole months wages in 1 trip!<br />
<br />
So we left with food, bed, tennis balls, treats and toys.<br />
<br />
Then we headed to pick Roscoe up. He said goodbye to his foster mum and dad and we promised to stay in touch via Facebook and they had agreed to continue fostering so we look forward to swapping stories.<br />
<br />
We took Roscoe for a walk in the hail and snow with bitter wind blowing a hoolie (as we say in Scotland) and returned to the car. Roscoe jumped in no problem, but he was not so keen when we started moving! Little whimpers and squeals and he tried to get in the front, we stopped and I sat in the back but he was not a happy pup pacing as much as he could and panting I tried to reassure him but only when he was quiet or briefly settled. I can see we will need to work on this but that is ok, as it may be that Roscoe's only experience of a car was his journey North from the pound which started at 8am and finished at 2am the following morning. My guess is in his wee Staffy head a car = stress and change, and once again it was going to be change for him.<br />
<br />
The journey home was very short and we arrived home. <br />
<br />
Welcome home RoscoeAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17834268920380707534noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869961747403006267.post-58371649729081652302013-03-24T01:59:00.001-07:002013-03-24T01:59:32.946-07:00Finding RoscoeAfter filling in the potential adopter form for <a href="http://www.anystaffielldorescue.com/" target="_blank">Any Staffie'll Do</a> we were contacted by them and a home visit was arranged. We chatted about our expectations and what we were looking for in our potential new dog and then had a quick look round our house and garden.<br /><br />Later that same day I received a message from the rescue suggesting dogs that may be suitable we arranged to go see a 1 year old at the weekend, it was a 70 odd mile journey so we decided to make it a day out. We met Eddie and he was lovely but a little cautious of Stuart (who can blame him who knows what he has been through in his short life) but he did come round quickly, we took him for a walk and for a young dog he behaved fabulously. We spent some time with his foster mum and chatted and said we would be in touch.<br />
<br />
The drive home was strange we started to talk about having Eddie as part of our family and the enormity of losing Ben hit us both hard were we doing the right thing? Of course we were but it was like a delayed shock and we decided the best remedy for shock was to stop for a nice lunch at a country pub.<br />
<br />
During lunch we both agreed Eddie would be a fabulous dog and had so much potential but would also need a lot of work as he was just a pup and as mentioned who knows what he has experienced so far in his life.<br /><br />We decided we would like to meet another dog or 2 before making any decisions.<br />
<br />
We contacted the rescue to ask about Harry who had 1st caught my eye on the initial visit to the website - but at 7 he was slightly older than we were looking for. But we decided we would go and visit him, so we arranged to go and see him.<br />
<br />
We went to meet him and were greeted by a large red Staffy with a tennis ball in his mouth, he was very excited to see us and it was clear he loved cuddles and had bonded well with his foster mum and dad and there was also a cat in the house however Harrys over exuberance to play with the cat resulted in the cat running and Harry chasing, but always with his ball in his mouth!<br />
<br />
It was also clear that Harry did not know his name so there was the potential to change it!<br />
<br />
We spent a couple of hours with Harry and left saying we would think about things, the car journey home this time was very different somehow we quickly found ourselves discussing dog names and what new name would suit Harry. By the time we got home the 1st thing we did was log on to look up name meanings and by the end of the night we had decided on Sandy or Brodie!<br />
<br />
WE contacted the rescue and said we were interested and then sat discussing things and the name Roscoe came in to my head, we had wanted a Scottish name but I could justify that Ros was a derivative of Ross - a very Scottish name and of course Roscoe a character in the Dukes of Hazzard a programme we grew up with....and so the name Roscoe was chosen!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17834268920380707534noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869961747403006267.post-48778657424993082792013-03-24T01:43:00.004-07:002013-03-24T01:43:43.710-07:00Choosing a rescueAs <a href="http://www.staffordshirerescuescotland.co.uk/" target="_blank">Staffordshire Rescue Scotland</a> did not have any suitable dogs we started to search for other rescues and there were many, sadly most in England, and as we live North of the border I knew would struggle persuading my hubby to travel South of the border! My good friend @Pat Elliot spent many hours searching the internet for our new family member and sending me links. Also jokingly (I think) sending links to <a href="http://www.battersea.org.uk/" target="_blank">Battersea</a> (where she got her lovely rescue Missy from) and suggesting we could visit Battersea and her in a rescue roadtrip!!<br />
<br />
However we found, with Pat's help the website for <a href="http://www.anystaffielldorescue.com/" target="_blank">Any Staffie'll Do Rescue</a> which takes dogs from all over the UK who are to be put to sleep as there time is up - which in some cases is only 7 days after they have been handed in to the pound. They have links to many local authority pounds and link up with various charitable organisations in England not only to source dogs but to transport them and even help keep them in kennels or emergency kennelling until transport can be organised.<br />
<br />
We decided this was a worthy charity and who knows our new family member may even eventually be from Battersea if we used them!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17834268920380707534noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1869961747403006267.post-19353128538745795152013-03-24T01:33:00.000-07:002013-03-24T01:33:22.981-07:00The decision to rescue a dogAfter losing our 8 year old Staffordshire cross very suddenly to cancer the house was empty and only those who have experienced owning a dog can truly understand the huge hole that is left.<br />
<br />
We quickly decided we needed a new dog not to replace Ben as that would never be possible but to allow us to share our home again.<br />
<br />
We also knew we wanted another Staffy or Staffy cross as they are such wonderful breed with such a bad press and so many in Rescues up and down the country<br />
<br />
And so our search began.<br />
<br />
I volunteer with +Staffordshire Rescue Scotland however they didn't have any cat friendly dogs available and we needed a dog that would be happy to share it's new home with Toots our now elderly rescue cat.<br />
<br />
I will end this 1st post in Roscoe's Blog with a photo of Ben our first Staffy cross who is now Ben the staffy Star who shines brightly every night watching over us<br />
